Greater SE Hospital lays off 82 workers

(Published December 6, 1999)

Greater Southeast Community Hospital laid off 82 non-clinical workers Nov. 29 as part of its financial recovery plan, hospital officials announced.

Hospital spokeswoman Michelle LeSane said the workers will receive at least two months worth of benefits, and the city’s Department of Employment Services has pledged to help the workers find new jobs.

LeSane said further layoffs are not expected. The reduction in the hospital’s workforce was predicted as part of the hospital’s sale, recently approved by a federal bankruptcy court in order to keep the medical facility from closing.

Arizona-based Doctors Community Healthcare Corp. recently agreed to pay about $21 million for the hospital. The company also owns Hadley Memorial Hospital, the only other hospital located east of the Anacostia River. Greater Southeast is the largest employer in Ward 8.
