Youth curfew enforcement to begin Sept. 7

(Published September 6, 1999)

The D.C. Metropolitan Police Department will begin enforcing the Districtís youth curfew law beginning Sept. 7.

Curfew hours for anyone under the age of 17 are 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Sunday through Thursday nights. Curfew on Friday and Saturday nights begins at one minute after midnight and continues until 6 the next morning.

Curfew violators will be picked up by police officers, who will try first to take them home or to the home of a relative or other responsible adult. However, if police are not able to find a responsible adult, the violators will be held at the district police stations. Police will then try to notify parents or guardians to come pick up the youths immediately. If a juvenile is not picked up by 6 a.m., they will be turned over to the D.C. Department of Human Services.

The curfew law, originally passed in 1995, was reinstated in June.
