Mayor fined $1,000 for failure to disclose

(Published June 28, 1999)

D.C. Mayor Anthony A. Williams was fined the maximum $1,000 penalty by the Office of Campaign Finance June 23 for violating the city’s campaign finance disclosure laws. Williams agreed to pay the fine from personal funds.

OCF Director Cecily E. Collier-Montgomery found Williams failed to report within 30 days that he had received payments exceeding $1,000 from consulting contracts he signed with Arthur Andersen Co. and NationsBank while running for office last year. The contract fees totaled $40,000.

Arthur Andersen and NationsBank each do business with the D.C. government. As chief financial officer, Williams authorized 45 contracts with Arthur Andersen, valued at about $4.5 million.
