City names seven 'Main Streets'

(Published May 19, 2003)

All seven neighborhoods that applied this year to participate in the D.C. Main Streets program were selected, Mayor Anthony A. Williams has announced.

Williams made the announcement May 7 in Mount Pleasant, one of the seven neighborhoods to receive the "Main Streets" designation.

Other neighborhoods selected are Adams Morgan, Dupont Circle, Shaw, Brookland, Shepherd Park/Takoma and Anacostia.

The Main Streets program is part of the "reStore DC" initiative launched by the Williams administration in January 2002 to help revitalize neighborhood business corridors and small business through organization design, promotion and economic restructuring of commercial areas.

Five neighborhoods were designated as "Main Streets" during last year’s competition.

Applications to be designated as "Main Streets" come from nonprofit organizations that can show a public and private sector commitment to support a local Main Street revitalization project for a minimum of five years.

Designated groups receive financial and technical assistance from the government to support their improvement efforts.

The following areas were designated this year for assistance:

• ADAMS MORGAN: Boundaries are U Street NW between 18th Street and Florida Avenue, Florida between U and California Street, and California between Florida and 18th.

• ANACOSTIA: Boundaries are the 1100 to 1500 blocks of Good Hope Road SE and the 1800 to 2200 blocks of Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. SE.
