Increased
taxicab fares start May 3

Getting around in the District of Columbia just got more expensive. New taxicab fares, starting May 3, take the basic fare in the District from $5 to $5.50 for being transported within a single zone. Passengers who need to cross eight zones will see their basic fare rise from $15.60 to $17.20.
In addition to base zone fares, charges for several additional services increased by 50 cents. Among them are charges for personal service and wait time. Telephoning for a cab, rather than hailing one on the street, will add $2 to the basic fare.
The new rates leave unchanged the $1 rush-hour surcharge for service from 7-9:30 a.m. and from 4-6:30 p.m. Also unchanged is the $1.50 surcharge for additional passengers.
Zone fares, last changed in May 2001, increased about 10 percent, as follows:
