Forum to address parent concerns
(Published February 21, 2005)
City health and school officials will meet with the community at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 23 to address concerns about possible contamination at Walker-Jones Elementary School.
City officials said that earlier this month they discovered a roof leak, inoperable exhaust fans and a moldy ceiling tile inside the school, located at 100 L St. NW , after students and staff complained of not feeling well. School officials said those problems have been corrected and that air quality tests conducted Feb. 16 by the Department of Health "showed that no fungal spores were present in the building and that it is not a health threat to students and staff."
Superintendent Clifford Janey decided to keep the school closed an extra day after President's Day to allow time for additional testing and inspections for rodent infestation and pigeon droppings. The school's 456 students are due to return to classes on Wednesday morning.
