Mayor appoints workforce council

A new Workforce Investment Council will be responsible for making recommendations to the mayor and the Department of Employment Services about workforce planning, policy development and oversight of the city’s job centers.

Mayor Anthony A. Williams swore in 34 business leaders as the council’s members Oct. 19.

Representing the public sector on the council are Arlene Ackerman, superintendent of D.C. Public Schools; Odie Washington, director of the Department of Corrections; Othello Mahone, interim director of the Department of Housing and Community Development; David Gilmore, court-appointed receiver of the D.C. Housing Authority; Jearline Williams, director of the Department of Human Services; and Gregory P. Irish, director of the Department of Employment Services.

Representing the private sector are Charlene Drew Jarvis, president of Southeastern University and Ward 4 councilwoman; Mary Davis of Washington Sports and Entertainment; Albert Brown of Community Preservation and Development Corp.; Rhoda W. Burwell of United for Change; Mario Acosta-Velez of the Latino Civil Rights Center; John H. McKoy, executive vice president of D.C. Agenda; Lina Frescas Dobbs, executive director of Wider Opportunities for Women; Lori M. Kaplan, executive director of the Latin American Youth Center; John T. Butler, president of Archbishop Carroll High School; Joslyn Williams of the Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO; B.J. Williams of Potomac Electric Power Co.; Melanie Young, director of human re-sources at Kaiser Permanente; Cynthia Terry of Giant Food; M.
