Another Safeway closing for renovations

(Published October 18, 1999)

Safeway officials have announced plans to temporarily close another grocery store for remodeling, the second such renovation in the District this year. The store at 1800 20th St. NW, known commonly as the "Townhouse," will close after the end of business Oct. 23 and will reopen Dec. 10.

The company said it plans to replace all the refrigerators, shelves, gondolas and the floor and ceiling.

The store also will get a redesigned loading dock as well as extensive remodeling to the interior and exterior.

In a statement, Safeway said it chose to close the store during renovation because keeping it open would extend the duration of the project.

Earlier this year, Safeway closed its aging Georgia Avenue store in the Petworth neighborhood for six weeks to renovate it.
