(Published September 6, 1999)

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority is preparing to open the two connecting stations on the Green line in Columbia Heights and Petworth with opening day ceremonies scheduled for Sept. 18.

Opening day festivities will begin at noon at the Columbia Heights station, 14th and Irving Streets NW, with a station blessing and a ribbon cutting ceremony. Invited dignitaries will then take a ceremonial train ride to the Georgia Avenue/Petworth station at Georgia and New Hampshire Avenues NW for the opening day ceremony.

Elected officials and transit officials will deliver remarks and musical selections will be featured at the event. Among those scheduled to attend the ceremonies are Mayor Anthony Williams, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, control board Chairman Alice Rivlin, and members of the city council. A reception will follow the ceremonies.

Members of the public will receive two free one-way Metrorail tickets. Metro customers will also receive free ride tickets on Sunday, Sept. 19 to ride the Metro to the new stations to attend Adams Morgan Day.

Workers are still putting the final touches on the two stations, finishing tile work and station kiosks. The stations were completed three months ahead of schedule at a cost of $643.6 million.
