National Night Out

Local activities to mark event’s 20th year on Aug. 5

Cookouts, concerts, candlelight vigils and organized neighborhood walks are among activities planned across the District Aug. 5 to mark the 20th year of National Night Out.

The annual event brings together law enforcement agencies, citizens, businesses, local officials and neighborhood organizations to strengthen police-community partnerships and promote anti-crime programs.

Special activities are planned by every Patrol Service Area (PSA) in the Metropolitan Police Department’s seven police districts. Some PSAs plan to begin the day’s activities in the morning, with events continuing into the night.

Mayor Anthony A. Williams and Police Chief Charles H. Ramsey will kick off the night’s events at 5 p.m. at Fort Stanton Recreation Center, 18th and Erie streets SE.

Listed below are some of the activities in each police district.


•PSA 102 will hold a flashlight walk through Sursum Corda and a community gathering at the Boys & Girls Club from 7-8:30 p.m.

•PSA 103 and PSA 106 will hold a joint cookout at Ludlow Taylor Field at Sixth and G streets NE.

•PSA 107 will host an open house at First District Police Headquarters, 415 Fourth St. SW, from 6-8:30 p.m.

•PSA 108 will hold a cookout at Marion Park, Fifth and D streets SE, from 6-8:30 p.m.

•PSA 111 will sponsor a Crime Prevention Seminar focusing on theft from auto and receiving stolen property.


•PSA 202 will sponsor a bingo game at the Senior Citizen Center at 4100 Butterworth St. NW.

•PSA 204 will host a Youth Crime Prevention display on the grounds of the National Zoo to raise awareness about youth violence and gangs.

•PSA 205 and PSA 206 will host a community softball game at Guy Mason Recreation Center, 3600 Calvert St. NW.


•PSA 302 and PSA 305 will sponsor a Kids’ Carnival, bicycle registration and a child car seat giveaway beginning at 4 p.m. in the 1400 block of Euclid Street NW.

•PSA 303 will begin a zero-tolerance enforcement campaign at 3 p.m.

•PSA 307 will hold a Community Crime Prevention Fair starting at 4 p.m. from 21st and P streets to 22nd and O streets NW.

•PSA 309 will hold a block party and product raffle in the 1700 block of Johnson Avenue NW.

•PSA will hold a community walk at 6 p.m., followed by refreshments in the park at New Jersey Avenue and O Street NW.


•PSA 403 will sponsor a block party from 6-9 p.m. in the 900 block of Madison Street NW.

•PSA 404 will hold a block party from 6-9 p.m. in the 200 block of Jefferson Street NW.

•PSA 406 will host a block party from 6-9 p.m. in the 900 block of Emerson Street NW.

•PSA 407 will hold a cookout from 6-9 p.m. at 4200 Second Street NE.

•PSA 408 will host an open house at 5100 First Place NE from 7-9 p.m.

•PSA 410 and PSA 412 will hold a joint block party from 6:30-8 p.m. at Park Road and Pine Street NW.

•PSA 411 and PSA 413 will hold a joint candlelight vigil with a choir and sermon from 6:30-8 p.m. at Greater Tried Stone Church, 1363 Otis Place NW.

•PSA 414 will sponsor a flag football game from 6:30-8 p.m. at 500 Hobart Place NW.


•PSA 501, PSA 503 and PSA 506 will sponsor a joint community walk, starting at 6 p.m. at Rhode Island and Eastern avenues NE, where the boundaries of all three PSAs meet.

•PSA 502 will sponsor a community walk at 7 p.m., starting at Fourth Street and Rhode Island Avenue NE, followed by refreshments in the community room at 611 Edgewood Street NE.

•PSA 508 will sponsor a Back-to-School Seminar and community awareness event from 5-7 p.m. at Trinidad Recreation Center on Childress Street NE.

•PSA 510 will hold a flashlight vigil/walk beginning at 7 p.m. in the 700 block of I Street NE and concluding in the 1200 block of Linden Place NE with refreshments.

•PSA 513 will hold an anti-crime rally and cleanup from 7-8 p.m. at 18th and D streets NE.


•PSA 603 will hold a cookout and neighborhood walk from 7:30-9:30 p.m. in the 300 block of 50th Street NE.

•PSA604 will hold a neighborhood walk and community celebration in the 300 and 400 blocks of Burbank Street SE.

•PSA 605 will sponsor a cookout from 6-9 p.m. at C.W. Harris Elementary School’s playground in the 300 block of 53rd Street SE.

•PSA 606 will hold a cookout from 5-9 p.m. in the 3500 block of B Street SE.

•PSA 608 will hold a cookout from 6:30-9 p.m. at 2900 M Street SE.

PSA 608 and the Penn-Branch Civic Association will sponsor a parking lot cookout at Texas Avenue and Carpenter Street SE from 7-9 p.m.

•PSA 608 and the Dupont Park Civic Association will hold a cookout at 30th Street and Pennsylvania Avenue SE from 7-9 p.m.

•PSA 610 will hold a block party from 7-9 p.m. at 2725 30th St. SE.


•PSA 701, PSA 702, PSA 703 and PSA 711 will jointly sponsor softball and basketball games, refreshments, music, a candlelight vigil and will host the citywide National Night Out kickoff event from 4-9 p.m. at Fort Stanton Recreation Center, 18th and Erie streets SE.

•PSA 709 and Winn Management Corp. will host a Family Day celebration from 1-6 p.m. in the 4200 block of Fourth Street SE.

•PSA 710 will host a night of remembrance celebration from 8-9 p.m. in the 4300 block of Halley Terrace SE.
