Hundreds of children are expected to compete this week to become part of this year’s "Mystics Mayhem" — the official cheerleading squad for the WNBA’s Washington Mystics.

The squad, with 30 members ranging in age from 7 to 18, performs during Mystics’ home games at MCI Center.

"The energy that the Mystics Mayhem brings to our team is incredible," said Judy Holland-Burton, senior vice president of business and basketball operations for the Mystics. "It is very easy to see why they a crowd favorite."

The Mystics are scheduled to open their 2003 season on May 23 against the Charlotte Sting in North Carolina. The Mystics’ home opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. June 6 against the Cleveland Rockers.

The Rockers also are scheduled to face the Mystics in a preseason contest at 7 p.m. May 13 at MCI Center. Half-price tickets are available for the pre-season match-up. Tickets may be purchased at the MCI Center box office or through TicketMaster.

The Mystics opened training camp May 1 at Marymount University with 15 players under contract. Five other players with contracts pending were expected to join their teammates at camp as their contracts and required physicals are completed.

Among last year’s players who will not return is center Vicky Bullett, who decided to retire. Team officials decided not to offer new contracts to Audrey Sauret and Maren Walseth.
