Hoop-It-UP at RFK

Local teams sought for annual NBA event

(Published May 5, 2003)

More than 2,000 local basketball players of all skills levels are expected to compete in the 15th annual NBA Hoop-It-Up competition May 31-June 1 at Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium.

The competition — hosted by the Washington Wizards and Washington Mystics — is designed to encourage skills development for team play.

Winners of the college/semi-professional "Top Gun" division will be eligible for regional competition to advance to the world championship 3-on-3 event as part of the 2004 NBA All-Star Weekend.

Registration deadline for teams of three, four or five players — including substitutes — is May 21 by fax or mail. Online registration is open through May 27. Persons 8 or older are eligible to compete in the youth and adult divisions. Teams will be placed in divisions with others of similar age and height. Teams are guaranteed three scheduled games during the two-day competition.

Winning and runner-up teams in each division will be awarded trophies for each player. All participants will receive an official event T-short and a "player bag" of gifts and special offers from sponsoring companies.

Entry fees range from $120 for a team of three or four players to $185 for registration in the Top Gun division. Adding a fifth person to a team increases the entry fee by $25. Entry forms also are available at Foot Locker stores, which is a sponsor of the event.

More information about registering is available online at or by calling 1-800-236-8992.

Spectator admission to the games is free. This year’s competition also will feature basketball-themed special events at no cost for registered players and spectators.

The special events, presented by companies sponsoring the 2003 NBA Hoop-It-Up Tour, will be available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. during the two-day competition.

In addition to Washington’s professional basketball teams, other local sponsors of the competition include AMC Theaters, Comcast SportsNet, the Radisson Barcelo Hotel, WPGC 95.5 FM and WBDC TV 50.

In addition to Foot Locker, other national sponsors of NBA Hoop-It-Up are Gatorade, Gatorade Energy Bar, New Balance, Verizon Wireless, McDonald’s, Spaulding, Speed Stick and Sprite.
