Fire chief asks motorists to ‘pay attention’ in emergencies

(Published January 28, 2002)

D.C. Fire Chief Ronnie Few is asking motorists to be more alert and heed traffic laws by yielding to emergency vehicles when they are answering a call for service.

The chief’s comments came in response to a recent spate of traffic accidents, some with injuries, that involved Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department vehicles. Fire/EMS spokesman Alan Etter said six vehicles were involved in accidents on a single day, Jan. 21.

"It’s very serious," Few said. "We call on everyone to please pay attention behind the wheel."

Few recently approved a progressive disciplinary program for Fire/EMS personnel found to be at fault in accidents while driving city vehicles.
